Bankroll management is the single most important skill in betting — far more so than any game strategy or match analysis. Players who manage their money well can stay in the game longer, learn more, and ultimately become far better players.
What Is a Bankroll?
A bankroll is the amount of money you set aside specifically for betting – it should only ever be money you can afford to lose without affecting your daily life. This is crucial: never use funds earmarked for essentials like rent, bills, or food to place bets.
- The 5% Per Bet Method: Cap each single bet at a maximum of 5% of your bankroll. If your bankroll is RM 500, no single bet should exceed RM 25.
- Set a Daily Loss Limit: Set a daily loss limit before you start — for example, RM 100 per day. Once that limit is reached, stop completely, no exceptions.
- Log Every Bet: Record every bet you place — the amount and the outcome. This helps you spot patterns and learn from past mistakes.
- Keep Your Betting Funds Separate from Your Savings: Keep your betting funds separate from your personal savings. Use a dedicated account or separate e-wallet.
- Only Top Up Your Bankroll from Winnings: Only increase your bet size when your bankroll has grown organically — not by topping up with fresh funds out of excitement.
Players who consistently use the 5% method rarely go bust in a single session. They may take losses, but those losses are never large enough to wipe out their entire bankroll.
Important Warning: Never try to "recover" losses by increasing your bet size. This is the costliest mistake in betting and the leading reason players end up losing more than they can afford.
